In the history of brewing beer in DC, few have had more bad luck than Hellbender Brewing Company. The brewery:

Hellbender thought the boiler would be a relatively easy fix, but like so many things that appear to be routine maintenance, it turns out they need a new one. We’ve spent ample time on this site covering how the pandemic has impacted the local brewing community, so you know there isn’t a lot of margin for error for many small businesses. Especially one as Bare Bones–get it!–as Hellbender. Area breweries have answered the call, and you can, too.

“We’re throwing an impromptu beer festival with beers from some of our best buds in the DMV to raise money for a new boiler. No tickets, just show up and pay for full or half pours of all beers available while they last throughout the day. The breweries listed are ones we had on speed dial (no longer a term), but we’re open to including more participants if they want to reach out. Cheers, and we love you all for the support you’ve shown us!” That’s what Hellbender wrote on social media earlier today.

Without a boiler, Hellbender can’t make beer, so local breweries have stepped up to donate kegs. You, dear reader, should buy pints or half pours of these beers–and Hellbender’s own kegged offerings–on Saturday, May 11, and the money goes to Hellbender’s boiler fund. Can’t make it to the brewery on Saturday? There’s also a Go Fund Me set up.

DC is blessed with excellent relations and relationships between breweries and the neighborhoods they serve, and that’s rarely more evident than at Hellbender. CEO, Founder, and Head Brewer Ben Evans and the Hellbender team help build community in Northeast DC every day, truly becoming a “third space” for people. We hope to see you on Saturday and here’s the Go Fund Me link again. Thank you, and thanks to the other breweries for helping out.
