Bars/Restaurants:
The Pug
Nearly everyone agrees – the bartenders here are the reason that The Pug has such a neighborhood-y, friendly feel. A small space, The Pug always has puffed cheese ball snacks and a list of draft beer options on the chalkboard. The walls are plastered in a hodge podge of boxing and football memorabilia, and you’ll feel right at home at the bar whether you order one of their brats or bring in your own food from one of the H Street vendors. At the time of our visit, sipping options included Hornsby Cider, Original Sin, Affligem Blonde, Natty Boh, Dale’s Pale Ale, Boddingtons, Bitburger, Abita, Red Hook, Brooklyn selections, and more. The Pug makes a great rainy day hideout, or a fun place to catch up with old friends over Connect Four or foosball.

The Red Palace
The Red and the Black and the Palace of Wonders merged together to bring us The Red Palace. Luckily, the beer menu is as good as ever. With three full service bars and an extensive craft beer menu, you’ll be able to drink all kinds of domestics, in a variety of styles, while you enjoy the New Orleans-themed atmosphere. There are also Vaudeville shows and live music that take place on the new larger stage. The Palace also has a virtual museum of sideshow oddities to satisfy your curiosity for the bizarre. A great place to hang out, take in a bearded lady and some live music, and sip on some suds.

The Argonaut Tavern
There are plenty of reasons to patron The ‘Naut – not least among them are the friendly bartenders, outdoor seating for summer sipping, and the amazing sweet potato fries. But c’mon, this is a beer blog, so we know you want the scoop on beverages. And you won’t be disappointed to hear, there is a great selection.

The Star and Shamrock
Jason Feldman, Mark Menard and Mike Schuster got together and decided to launch something you’ve never seen in DC before – maybe anywhere, for that matter. The result: a place to eat and drink that feels homey and inviting, yet uncommon and up-to-the minute enough to be a part of the always expanding H Street scene. Theirs is a unique cultural fusion of Irish Pub and Jewish Deli. Recently opened, the Star & Shamrock has a pleasing selection of interesting beers, full list of Irish whiskeys, bourbon, scotch, and rye, and food just like Bubbe used to make, including savory latkes and pan-fried matzo balls sautéed in onions. The kitchen is not kosher, but all of the meats that they use are. Enjoy it all in the simple, attractive interior of beautiful woodwork and classic tin ceilings — none of that overdone, artificial-feeling Irish pub scene here.
On draft during our visit: He’Brew Messiah Bold, Brooklyn Lager, Brooklyn E.I.P.A., Guinness, Harp, Masgner’s Cider, Bud Light, Shocktop, Kilkenny Irish Cream Ale.
In bottles: Brooklyn Pennant Ale 55, Brooklyn Brown Ale, Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout, Coney Island Lager (22 oz.), Coney Island Albino (22 oz.), Coney Island Sword Swallower (22 oz.), Bear Republic Hop Rod Rye, Blue Point Blueberry Ale, Founders Red Rye, He’Brew Bittersweet R.I.P.A., He’Brew Jewbilation (22 oz.), He’Brew Origin “Pom Ale” (22 oz.), Carlsberg, Original Sin Cider, Original Sin Pear Cider, Rasta-fa-Rye Ale (22 oz), Budweiser, Miller Lite, Samuel Adams Irish Red, Smithwick’s, Curim Celtic Wheat.

Little Miss Whiskey’s Golden Dollar
Little Miss Whiskey’s is a bottle only beer destination, where good times seem to inevitably lead to samples of their house-signature frozen sweet tea concoction, and possibly trying to spin in the row of vintage barber’s chairs located near the back of the bar. Our friendly bartender Leslie was happy to recommend (in a fantastic southern drawl) a delicious brew based on our interests, and the vibe of the bar was quite palpably one of laissez le bon temps rouler. With Mardi Gras décor and dark lighting, this seems to be a place where locals mingle over beers and bourbons, stumbling in and out with faces all smiles.
In bottles: Stroh’s, DAB Original, Hansa Export, Grolsch, Schlitz High Gravity, Miller Highlife Tallboys, Bell’s Two Hearted Ale, Bell’s Lager, Bell’s Kalamazoo Stout, Bell’s Porter, North Coast Old Rasputin, Duckrabbit Milk Stout, Stone Pale Ale, Stone IPA, Stone Levitation Ale, Stone Ruination IPA, Avery’s The Reverend Quadruple Ale, Stone Arrogant Bastard Ale, Bear Republic Hop Rod Rye, Bear Republic Red Rocket, Bear Republic Racer 5, Lagunitas Pils, Founders Red Rye, Founders Dirty Bastard, Anderson Valley Boont Amber Ale, Avery White Rascal, Avery Ellie’s Brown Ale, New Holland Dragon’s Milk, Weyerbacher Double Simcoe IPA, Penn Brewing Kaizer Pils, Penn Brewing Dark Lager, Floris Framboise, Spaten Optimator, Paulaner Salvator, Ayinger Celebrator Dopplebock, Ayinger Dunkel, Weihenstephaner Hefe-Weissbier, Weihenstephaner Hefe-Weissbier Dunkel, Schneider Aventinus, Schneider Aventinus Eisbock, Hofbrau Hefe-Weizen, Kulmbacher Monschof Schwarzbier, Kulmbacher EKU, Eggenberg Urbock, Eggenber Samichlaus, Eggenberg Pilsner, Heller Rauchbier Marzen, Strongbow Cider, Boddingtons, Guinness, Stella Artois, Yuengling, Amstel Light, Miller Light, Coors Light.

Granville Moore’s
A legendary destination for mussels and frites, and without question, beer. Too many delicious Belgians to list, both available in bottles and on draft at the downstairs or upstairs bar, or via your friendly server as you dine al fresco on the back patio. Foodies everywhere know of the Executive Chef, Teddy Folkman (who will make an appearance on Season 5 of The Next Food Network Star), but perhaps Granville Moore’s best kept secret is their amazing pastry chef, Kim. Dessert and a fine beer is a beautiful way to end a good meal, and her tequila cheesecake is not to be missed. This might be my version of heaven.
The beer selection for Granville Moore’s, including rotating happy hour specials, can be found on the restaurant’s website, www.granvillemoores.com

Toyland
Stepping into Toyland, you feel perhaps that Dean Martin and Petula Clark might stop in any minute to do an impromptu show. The entire retro-themed establishment is outfitted in vintage pieces from a day gone by, from the pleather-wrapped barstools, authentic fifties and sixties barware, and the Rocket sign from an old laundromat that used to be housed on H Street. There are board games for your enjoyment, and owner Garrick Lumsden is happy to make sure you’re having a good time. In a place like this, it almost seems wrong not to order a Manhattan or a Martini, but if that doesn’t ring your bell, the beer list is solid.
At the time of our visit, draft beers included Brooklyn Lager, Abita Turbodog, Magic Hat #9, and Loose Cannon Hop3. The bottle selection included Sea Dog Blue Paw, Magic Hat Circus Boy, Bear Republic Race 5, Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA, Oskar Blues Dales Pale Ale, Flying Dog Raging Bitch, Victory Prima Pils, North Coast Red Seal Ale, Tröegs HopBack, Abita Amber, Bell’s Amber, Bear Republic Red Rocket, Tröegs Tröegenator, Mad River Brewing Jamaica Brand Red Ale, Rogue Dead Guy Ale, Founders Brewing Dirty Bastard, Avery Ellie’s Brown Ale, Great Lakes Brewing Dortmunder, Victory Lager, Miller Lite, Corona Extra, Harp. Magner’s Irish Cider, Yuengling Lager, Pabst Blue Ribbon, Guinness, and O’Douls.

H Street Country Club
Remember your childhood birthday parties at Chuck E. Cheese, trying to win enough points to redeem for coveted prizes? Now add beer and mini-golf, and you’ve got H Street Country Club. The beer list here isn’t as diverse as other places in the neighborhood, but they do have some appealing options on their rotating drafts. Standards in bottles include Negro Modelo, Pacifico, Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA, Oskar Blues Dales Pale Ale, Butternuts Moo Thunder, Corona, Tecate, Dos Equis Amber, Dos Equis Lager, Budweiser, and Bud Light.

Happy Hour: H Street Country Club has Happy Hour food/drink/mini-golf specials that change daily, and can be found at www.hstreetcountryclub.com.
Bier Garten Haus
The premier beer garden in Washington, DC has an extensive selection of German brews. They also feature some great German fare (you’ll want to try the pretzel rolls over…and over…and over…) A very fun atmosphere, the outdoor space is fantastic and filled with benched tables at which you will meet new friends!
Located at 1355 H Street, next to Rock & Roll Hotel.
Smith Commons
Smith Commons has a little bit of something for everyone on H Street. Interested in finer dining? Step into the first floor Smith. Want a bite at the bar? Head up to the second and third floor Commons. No matter where you are, you’ll find a great selection of mostly domestic craft beers. Selections from Dogfish Head, Stone, Goose Island, and Flying Dog are mainstays, while other taps rotate seasonally. You’ll also find a number of bottles to sample. The food is delicious, whether you’re going for the exotic or the every day. And, should you somehow be tired of craft beer, the bartenders mix a mean cocktail.

The Queen Vic
This British eatery just opened up, so we’ll review it soon. A fine place to catch a pint and have some traditional pub fare from the United Kingdom. We’ll update this as soon as we get over there for some bangers and mash!

Everyone I know is really excited about Biergarten House opening. Maybe it’ll take some of the pressure off Church Key, because I think it’s going to be the hot spot in town for a while.
