Fifteen years is an impressive run for a bar and restaurant, and Boundary Stone intends to celebrate in style. On Thursday, September 24th, the Bloomingdale mainstay has a release party for FÜNFZEHN!, a 5.2% ABV German-style Schwarzbier brewed with Atlas Beer Works. From 6-10pm expect a special menu, deals on 6-packs, and music.

The beer was hatched in a Chilean metal bar while celebrating the 50th birthday of Boundary Stone co-founder and co-owner Gareth Croke. “We were drinking a Chilean craft dark lager and discussing the 15 yr [anniversary],” fellow co-founder and -owner Colin McDonough tells us. “This bar was sick an American burger & craft beer bar with all punk and metal themes. So good we went back twice!” Atlas didn’t take much convincing. “We’ve been friends with the Boundary Stone guys for a long time, so when they said they wanted to make a beer for their 15th anniversary, we were immediately on board. Even more so when they said they wanted a dark lager,” says Daniel Vilarrubi, Director of Brewing Operations.

Vilarrubi also has tasting notes. “We were aiming for a classic schwarzbier — dark in color, but light enough in body to be smooth and drinkable. I think the Fünfzehn really delivers. It’s malty, a little bready, with upfront notes of medium roast coffee and a counterintuitively light body.” It’ll be available at Atlas locations as well, though the Stone may get first crack at it. If you’re looking for a beer-shot combo, McDonough has your covered. “Our Hughes Brother Barrel Pick is a nice spicy 10 yr old rye. A lovely match to the roasted malts of Funfzehn!”

You’ll have another opportunity to try the beer on Saturday the 26th, including deals on Funfzehn!.

We noted the presence of the famous barrel-aged bear on the label, so we asked McDonough what it would take to bring back one of our favorite events, the Battle of the Barrel-Aged Beers, and if are there plans to barrel age this beer. “The bear, our favorite companion to beer centric events, had to make an appearance,” he wrote. “Plus Schwartzbier & Schwartzbar are very closely intertwined in Germany! Honestly that is better question for the folks that brew and drink the stuff, it seems barrel aged beers have fallen out of fashion. So it makes it harder to dedicate time, space and dollars to one-off night of revelry. But barrel aged bears never die so who knows….” As Lloyd Christmas puts it, so you’re saying there’s a chance? We’re not holding our breath, but join us in wishing a happy 15th to Boundary Stone.
