Virginia breweries have opened taprooms and “breweries”* in the DC market for a few years now. Solace Outpost in Navy Yard, Aslin on 14th Street NW near Logan Circle, and Crooked Run’s Union Market locations gave Virginia’s finest a foothold in DC. On Friday, June 21, Atlas Brew Works returns the favor, opening their Alexandria Tap Room & Brewery in the Carlyle Crossing development at 2429 Mandeville Lane, two blocks from the Eisenhower Avenue Metro Station.
As is the case at Atlas’ Half Street SE location, Andy’s Pizza provides the food, with a special deal during opening weekend: “Atlas Alexandria will offer a free slice of Andy’s Pizza with purchase of a pint of beer from Friday, June 21, through Sunday, June 23, during normal operating hours.”
A press release notes the size of the brewhouse and expands on Atlas’ commitment to brewing as sustainably as possible.
“The 6,000 square-foot space will boast six bright tanks, a sun-soaked patio, and a long beer hall-style bar, perfect for after work happy hours, weekend gatherings with friends, and everything in between. Fans of the Atlas brand will find familiarity in delicious food offerings from Andy’s Pizza like pizza, salads, wings, and fries, similar to the Navy Yard location, and comfort in the old school arcade vibe of Ivy City with pinball machines and other various nostalgic games. A semi-private space will be available for celebrations and social gatherings, and beer tastings and tours will also be available for groups when booked in advance.
Keeping with its reputation and mission of sustainable stewardship, Atlas plans to pursue sustainable energy sources at its new location. The location will use 100% electricity for both the brewery and the kitchen, eliminating the use of traditional fossil fuels. The brewery design allows for Atlas to employ water reclamation in its processes, saving both water and energy consumption in the brewing process.”
We have updated the Alexandria Brew Trail accordingly, please give Atlas a warm welcome! They’re not done in Virginia, though. A taproom at National Airport will open later this year. As we reported last year–in a piece that correctly predicted a Great American Beer Festival medal for Silent Neighbor Stout–Atlas will open a larger production brewery in Anacostia in 2025.
* Solace Outpost barrel-ages beer brewed at their Virginia locations, which in the District of Columbia counts as brewing. Crooked Run has finished Alora, their Italian-style pilsner, in tanks at Union Market, though the wort is trucked in from Virginia. Aslin on 14th Street has a 1-barrel nano-brewing system, though to our knowledge it has not been used.
