There’s a lot going on in October, with the namesake fest and its malty beers winding down, giving way to the beastliest beer fest on the East Coast, Snallygaster. There are a lot of heavy hitters between these two events, so we wanted to go with something nice and easy for our October beer of the month with The Brew Shop. Enter Hawkley Brewering’s Easy Tiger Helles, 5.5% ABV, self-described as “simple, classic Helles lager crafted to please beer drinkers of all stripes,” per Hawkley owner Monte Hawkins. “Light and crisp with a pleasant malt character, it’s made to come back for another.

Hawkley occupies the location in Herndon where Aslin launched their empire, and where Juicy made hazies for a few years. Now that Hawkley has been up and running for a bit, they’ve begun canning and distributing beer across northern Virginia, which makes it easier to try their beer without venturing into the wilds of–checks notes–Fairfax County.

When you relax and rest up from all this month’s beer adventures, this is what you want in your fridge; beer flavored beer that you can have two of, with just enough malt oomph to hit the middle fives in alcohol by volume and not get tagged with the “fizzy yellow water” moniker. Hawkins agrees: “German-style lager that tastes like beer,” he writes. So get thee over to Arlington’s Brew Shop for your shifty at some point this month. Future you will thank you. As always, DC Beer Patreon members get 10% 4-packs.
