With Juneteenth coming up, let’s check in on some of the Black-owned breweries in the area.
First up, Liquid Intrusion Brewing Co. is a finalist for the Sam Adams Brewing the American Dream Experience. Baltimore’s Checkerspot Brewing won this competition in 2023; doing so enabled them to move into a new facility with increased production, so let’s cross our fingers and hope LIBCo wins!

LIBCo will be at Herndon’s Brewbilee 2 on Saturday, June 28, 2025, hosted by the Black Brew Movement and Bitter Fruit Brewing. From 1-5pm you can taste beers from twelve (12) area Black-owned breweries, with entertainment for kids and families starting at 11am. The event is right off the Washington & Old Dominion Bike Trail. You know what to do.
Can’t make it to Herndon? LIBCo will be at metrobar on Sunday, June 22, 2025 for The Blacker the Berry: Black Wine & Spirits Festival. Jordan Harvey may be in attendance with some Third Hill Brewing goodies as well. Tasting tickets available onsite or in advance.

Keep your eye on Hennessey Creek, a soon-to-be farm brewery in Brandywine, Maryland. Leon Harris, formerly of Heroic Aleworks and Port City, is involved, which means you should be, too.
Local Black-owned breweries are also participating in this year’s Barrel and Flow festival in Pittsburgh in August. Black Viking, Liquid Intrusion, and Soul Mega will all be pouring their ales. Look for collaborations as well, including Soul Mega and Troegs Independent Brewing, Black Viking and New France Brewing Company, and Soul Mega and Liquid Intrusion. We are not at liberty to divulge the beer styles, but watch their socials as well as Barrel and Flow’s.
