DC Beer Week 2017, which will take place August 20-27, has announced this year's Solidarity Brew, a Brett IPA. The beer, which will be brewed at Right Proper's Brookland facility, is projected to be 6% ABV and feature Citra, Mosaic, and Raku hops. The Solidarity Brew, a DC Beer Week tradition, will be found at area bars and restaurants and celebrates the camaraderie among area brewers and breweries.
DC Beer Week is also starting a new tradition this year with an inaugural homebrew competition. Homebrewers are challenged to brew a clone of the Solidarity Brew. Competition winners will pour their winning brew at a special DCBW Homebrewer Celebration event during DC Beer Week. In addition to the "Solidarity Beer Clone" category, there is also a "Beer in the Spirit" category that asks homebrewers to submit beers according to these parameters:
- 6% ABV or lower
- 30-40 IBUs
- Citra as the primary hop
- Pilsner malt as 1/3 or more of the total grist
