Mother Earth may be billions of years old but Mother Earth Brewing is one of the newest additions to the DC Beer scene. After successful appearances at SAVOR, Mother Earth entered our fair market in November. The Kinston, NC brewery threw several area parties to introduce itself to the market. Your fearless DC Beer team tested out the wares from the heart of the old tobacco belt and found ourselves pleased that they joined our little party. Two favorites of this author are Dark Cloud Dunkel and the seasonal Silent Night. The editorial team decided it was time we learned a little about Mother Earth’s story. DCBeer was able to get connected with head brewer Josh. After the jump is what Josh Brewer had to say.
DCBeer.com: Please give a brief history of Mother Earth
Mother Earth: Take the goodness of garden-grown products, the warmth of small town life, the earthy ethic of rock 'n roll, a deep respect for a time-honored craft…and you have the ingredients of Mother Earth Brewing. Born in the summer of 2008, Mother Earth is the dream-child of Stephen Hill and Trent Mooring, two guys from Kinston, North Carolina, a sweet southern town in the heart of the old tobacco belt. We have a 20bbl brew house with 10 fermenters and 5 brite tanks. We bottle, can and keg our product for distribution in NC, GA and DC.
Why does Mother Earth (ME) want to enter the DC market at this time?
Logistically it’s an easy ship for us to get to DC. DC has a great craft beer scene with plenty of beer bars and retail shops to keep us brewing.
What do you think of the DC beer scene?
Since we launched I have been to DC three times and love the places I have gone to (Black Squirrel, ChurchKey, Pizzeria Paradiso, etc…)
What do you want beer drinkers to think when they have their first ME?
Clean, balanced, easy to drink and to style when it needs to be
What do you hope or plan to accomplish in DC during your first year in the market?
It would be nice to have 100 accounts in the market and have a handful of events like beer dinners and new beer launches.
Do you have any special events planned in DC in the near future?
We are in the planning stages with our distributor for our 2013 calendar of events so stay tuned
If you weren't drinking your own brews, what is your drink of choice?
New Glarus Raspberry Tart and Devils Backbone Vienna Lager
What else would you like to tell the DC beer community about ME?
We are the first LEED certified brewery in the US. We are a family run business. We have a huge passion for growing in baby steps and don’t want to be the brewery that supplies every bar and restaurant and then can’t fill orders because we grew too fast.
Thanks, Josh, for taking the time to talk with us! Look for Mother Earth beers at your local craft beer shop and venue!
