Personally I’m a sucker for hoppy red ales. Beers like Green Flash’s Hop Head Red, Lagunitas’s Lucky 13, and even Tröegs HopBack Amber, which pair a substantial hop bill with a malty caramel backbone are the cat’s meow.

And now, thanks to Mad Fox Brewing Company, I can find an example of one of my favorite styles a hop, skip, and a Metro ride away. Today, Mad Fox launches Renegade Imperial Red Ale as part of its Tuesday Tapping series.

Here’s how Mad Fox describes the brew:

The Renegade Imperial Red IPA is brewed with British Pale and Crystal malts and Belgian Aromatic malt.

Tasting Notes:
Pours a deep red head which cascades slowly down the shoulders of the glass. Fresh sharp piney hops jump out first in the aroma, followed by silky caramel and citrus peel. Hops tingle up front in the flavor with rosemary herbal, grapefruit peel and a caramel malt backbone. 100% Simcoe hops from Yakima Valley Washington in the kettle and dry-hopped.

If you go to try this new beer today, there are two pairing options available for it out of the Mad Fox kitchen:
– Roasted bone marrow with grilled bread and garlic confit.
– Half shell Virginia oysters with orange-daikon vinaigrette

As fall fast approaches, hoppy red ales are a good transition beer from summer into autumn. If you’re near Mad Fox, try one of the Renegades. You might just see me doing the same.
