Little goes on in the sleepy suburbs of Ashburn, although the area has been developing. If you are a discerning beer geek who desperately needs to travel more, there has historically been little reason to check out Ashburn, until now.
Every first Wednesday of the month, you’re invited to make the trek to Lost Rhino Brewing Company and sample some great brews. Brewery personnel pour samples and give tours in a flexible and friendly format.
$10 gets you a tasting glass and a chance to sample anything and everything the brewery has to offer. Live music and food trucks show up to provide both nourishment and harmony for your soul as well.
I spoke with Favio Garcia, Lost Rhino’s head brewer, about the origins of this unique first Wednesday event. He brought it over from the brewery he previously worked at, Old Dominion. The purpose behind the event is to give people a chance to meet the staff and tour the brewery in an open format. Lost Rhino is genuinely interested in building a relationship with the community. After all, nothing brings people together quite like great local beer for a good price.
This upcoming Wednesday will feature a new limited release, Full Steam Ahead Amber Lager. It will only be around for a little while so make sure to get some samples and possibly a growler to go. New River Pale Ale is a personal favorite of mine and a great year-round brew with an interesting story. You’ll have to come to the brewery to get the details on New River, which has become a local favorite as well.
The last First Wednesday hosted over 250 people, not bad for a weeknight in a sleepy town. Lost Rhino is also under expansion at the moment, so it will be a great opportunity to see the success they have been able to create so far. Make sure to get a group together and venture out to the ‘burbs around 5pm for this unique event.
