So we dropped the ball on this a bit, but better late than never. Yesterday, ChurchKey kicked off its second Mikkeller Single Hop Draft Extravaganza. Last year, Mikkel Borg Bjergsø brewed 10 Single Hop beers and ChurchKey had all of them on draft at one time. These beers are a great primer for learning about different hop varieties. From ChurchKey’s event description: “There is also a slight change in the brewing procedure this time around: the same base recipe is used to create the 6.8% IPAs but instead of aiming for the same IBU (bitterness) level in each beer as last year, the same amount (by weight) of each hop variety is used for bittering, flavor, aroma, and dry-hopping. In addition, the malt comes from the same lot. This is really a fantastic way to learn about the different flavors and aromas, and intensities of flavors and aromas, found in different hops!”
This year, Mikkeller brewed 19 single hop beers, and ChurchKey has (or had) all of them. Not sure which of these may have kicked last night, but I’m sure a number of them are still on. If you want a really wild experience, order 3-4 of these beers, which are priced individually by the full pour or taster, and see the effect on flavor that different hop varieties can have.
