Tonight, Wednesday, May 11th, join ChurchKey as they tap two beers in the most traditional manner!

ChurchKey will be pouring two of the newest creations from Brauerei Heller-Trum, the inimitable Smoke Beer producer from Bamberg, Germany, directly from wood-clad kegs. This gravity pour allows the beers to mimic the flavor of cask ale and is how it’s done at the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage brewpub in Bamberg.

Beginning at 6 PM, ChurchKey will be offering both the Aecht Schlenkerla Fastenbier and the Aecht Schlenkerla Oak Smoke directly from the wood-clad kegs.

No admission fee. Both brews will be priced in 4 oz. taster and full glass pours.

Here’s some more info on the beers:

Aecht Schlenkerla Fastenbier: From Ash Wednesday through Easter Sunday, the Christian community has practiced 40 days of ‘fasting’ since the 2nd century. According to the principle that “liquids do not break the fast”, the monks in the middle-age monasteries would brew a stronger, more nutritious beer for the time of Lent to stay in shape for daily labor. Aecht Schlenkerla Fastenbier is based on this tradition. It is an unfiltered Smoke Beer, full-bodied, highly drinkable, and showing strong malty flavors, rounded out with tempered smoky notes and a light bitterness.

Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Oak Smoke: Following century-old recipes, all malts made at the Schlenkerla brewery are dried by wood fire. While for the classic “Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier” traditionally beech has been – and still is – used, the malt for Schlenkerla Oak Smoke is kilned with oak wood. The resulting Oak Smoke Malt has a smoother and more multi-layered smoky note than the intensely aromatic Beechwood-Smoked Malt. The complex smokiness in Schlenkerla Oak Smoke is balanced by the multifaceted bitterness of the finest Hallertau aroma hops.
