This past week most of the DC craftbeer-o-sphere has been consumed with talk of where to find Bell’s Hopslam and whether Hopslam is worth all of the hype it receives. Regardless of your thoughts on the second question, there’s no doubt that the hype surrounding the Michigan brewer’s incredibly hoppy double IPA brewed with honey makes kegs kick almost instantaneously after being tapped.

Luckily for all of the hopheads floating around out there, Sierra Nevada’s Hoptimum is now in the DC area. Unluckily, its quantities may be just as limited as Hopslam.

Billed as a “whole-cone imperial IPA,” Sierra Nevada describes Hoptimum as “a 100 IBU whole-cone hurricane of flavor.” It’s hopped, re-hopped, and torpedo hopped, much like the venerable Hopslam. Weighing in at 10.4%, Hoptimum is bittered with German Magnum hops; the aroma hops are Simcoe and a “New Proprietary Variety.” It is dry-hopped with the Simcoe and this new variety, and finally it’s run through a torpedo filed with Chinook and Citra hops.
