Lets face it, hops are the current breadwinner amongst American craft brewers. The vast majority of uber-hyped beer releases are over-the-top hoppy beers. Anyone that attended the Michigan rare beer party during DC Beer Week at The Big Hunt can surely attest as an entire keg of the much-praised Bell’s Hopslam kicked in just under ten minutes.
In the spirit of keeping you apprised of other breaking hoppy news, DCBeer.com has learned that the northern Virginia area will be getting a very limited supply of Ballast Point Sculpin, possibly as soon as this week. Ballast Point has been in the area for some time now but has never been able to get this limited release American IPA out to Virginia.
Sculpin is currently ranked #1 on Beer Advocate as the top American IPA in the world. Other beers in this category include Bell’s Two Hearted, Bear Republic Racer 5, and Blind Pig IPA from Russian River. Regardless of how you feel about beer ratings or Beer Advocate, Sculpin is mentioned in the same breath with some very impressive company.
In terms of availability, this one is going to go quick. The entire state of Virginia got a mere 30 cases, and of those northern Virginia will receive only 12. We have no details as to who is getting what but we suspect our local favorites will be getting their fair share. We will keep you posted when we find out where you can find this great beer; we hope you will do the same for us in our comments section!
