The Pug

The Pug

Sponsorship

Nearly everyone agrees – the bartenders here are the reason that The Pug has such a neighborhood-y, friendly feel.  A small space, The Pug always has puffed cheese ball snacks and a list of draft beer options on the chalkboard.   The walls are plastered in a hodge podge of boxing and football memorabilia, and you’ll feel right at home at the bar whether you order one of their brats or bring in your own food from one of the H Street vendors.  At the time of our visit, sipping options included Hornsby Cider, Original Sin, Affligem Blonde, Natty Boh, Dale’s Pale Ale, Boddingtons, Bitburger, Abita, Red Hook, Brooklyn selections, and more.  The Pug makes a great rainy day hideout, or a fun place to catch up with old friends over Connect Four or foosball.

Red Palace

The Red and the Black

The Red and the Black and the Palace of Wonders merged together to bring us Red Palace. Luckily, the beer menu is as good as ever. With three full service bars and an extensive craft beer menu, you’ll be able to drink all kinds of domestics, in a variety of styles, while you enjoy the New Orleans-themed atmosphere. There are also Vaudeville shows and live music that take place on the new larger stage. The Palace also has a virtual museum of sideshow oddities to satisfy your curiosity for the bizarre. A great place to hang out, take in a bearded lady and some live music, and sip on some suds.

The Argonaut

The Argonaut

There are plenty of reasons to patron The ‘Naut – not least among them are the friendly bartenders, outdoor seating for summer sipping, and the amazing sweet potato fries.  But c’mon, this is a beer blog, so we know you want the scoop on beverages.  And you won’t be disappointed to hear, there is a great selection here. Great nightly specials always make for a good reason to come in, have a pint, and enjoy some tacos or wings.

Star and Shamrock

The Star and Shamrock

Sponsorship

Jason Feldman, Mark Menard and Mike Schuster got together and decided to launch something you’ve never seen in DC before – maybe anywhere, for that matter.  The result:  a place to eat and drink that feels homey and inviting, yet uncommon and up-to-the minute enough to be a part of the always expanding H Street scene.  Theirs is a unique cultural fusion of Irish Pub and Jewish Deli. Star and Shamrock has a pleasing selection of interesting beers, full list of Irish whiskeys, bourbon, scotch, and rye, and food just like Bubbe used to make, including savory latkes and pan-fried matzo balls sautéed in onions.  The kitchen is not kosher, but all of the meats that they use are.  Enjoy it all in the simple, attractive interior of beautiful woodwork and classic tin ceilings — none of that overdone, artificial-feeling Irish pub scene here.

Little Miss Whiskey’s Golden Dollar

Little Miss Whiskey's

Little Miss Whiskey’s is a bottle only beer destination, where good times seem to inevitably lead to samples of their house-signature frozen sweet tea concoction, and possibly trying to spin in the row of vintage barber’s chairs located near the back of the bar.  Our friendly bartender Leslie was happy to recommend (in a fantastic southern drawl) a delicious brew based on our interests, and the vibe of the bar was quite palpably one of laissez le bon temps rouler.  With Mardi Gras décor and dark lighting, this seems to be a place where locals mingle over beers and bourbons, stumbling in and out with faces all smiles.

Granville Moore’s

Granville Moore's

A legendary destination for mussels, frites, and, without question, beer.  Too many delicious Belgians to list, both available in bottles and on draft at the downstairs or upstairs bar, or via your friendly server as you dine al fresco on the back patio.  Foodies everywhere know of the Executive Chef, Teddy Folkman (who will make an appearance on Season 5 of The Next Food Network Star), but perhaps Granville Moore’s best kept secret is their amazing pastry chef, Kim.  Dessert and a fine beer is a beautiful way to end a good meal, and her tequila cheesecake is not to be missed.  This might be my version of heaven.

H Street Country Club

H Street Country Club

Remember your childhood birthday parties at Chuck E. Cheese, trying to win enough points to redeem for coveted prizes?  Now add beer and mini-golf, and you’ve got H Street Country Club.  The beer list here isn’t as diverse as other places in the neighborhood, but they do have some appealing options on their rotating drafts.

Biergartenhaus

Biergarten Haus

Sponsorship

The premier beer garden in Washington, DC has an extensive selection of German brews. They also feature some great German fare (you’ll want to try the pretzel rolls over…and over…and over…) A very fun atmosphere, the outdoor space is fantastic and filled with benched tables at which you will meet new friends!

Smith Commons

Smith Commons has a little bit of something for everyone on H Street. Interested in finer dining? Step into the first floor Smith. Want a bite at the bar? Head up to the second and third floor Commons. No matter where you are, you’ll find a great selection of mostly domestic craft beers. Selections from Dogfish Head, Firestone Walker, Goose Island, and Flying Dog are mainstays, while other taps rotate seasonally. You’ll also find a number of bottles to sample. The food is delicious, whether you’re going for the exotic or the every day. And, should you somehow be tired of craft beer, the bartenders mix a mean cocktail.

The Queen Vic

The Queen Vic

A fine British eatery and place to catch some pub fare and a proper pint. Soccer fans will find their brethren here ready to cheer for whatever match is on. The beer list here has some great English, Irish, and Scottish selections as you might expect. Not a ton of places to get Bellhaven and Twisted Thistle in DC, but this is one of them!

The Big Board

The Big Board

The Big Board has one of the more interesting bar or restaurant concepts that we’ve ever seen. The Big Board takes its name from the stock market and tries to function in the same way. The prices on all of the draft beers fluctuate according to how many have been ordered. The more of a beer is ordered, the lower the price drops. Economists will note that this is the reverse of how demand pricing usually works, but we’ll take it anyway. In addition to a solid (though not extensive) beer selection, they also cook a mean burger. Stop by and try to drive those prices down even further.

Boundary Road

Boundary Road

Boundary Road is a fine neighborhood gastropub with a really thoughtfully curated beer menu. Not a huge selection, but great examples of a wide variety of styles. Plenty of charcuterie and other delicious delectables to pair with the kitchen’s offerings, too. A great place for a date or a nightcap, Boundary Road also has a nice wine and cocktail selection as well.
