Find good beer: Georgetown Beer Guide

Georgetown, while not as much craft beer haven as other neighborhoods in DC, still has a few choice spots to grab quality drafts and bottles, most along the main drag on M Street. Below is a list of some of your best bets for finding quality brews in Georgetown.

Pizzeria Paradiso
The Georgetown location of Pizzeria Paradiso (younger sibling to the original Dupont Circle location and middle child vis-à-vis the newly opened Old Town incarnation) is not only a great place to get wood-fired, Neapolitan-style pies, but a fantastic place to get a beer—or a beer AND a pizza! The birre menu at Paradiso Georgetown includes 16 frequently rotating taps from craft breweries here and abroad (often ones more uncommonly found on tap) , a cask offering, and a bottle list several pages long. And while you’re sipping your brew, whether at the birreria bar or at a table in the main dining area, make sure to try the Siciliana pizza: with tomato, zucchini, eggplant, sweet peppers, red onion, capers, garlic, oregano,  mozzarella, and pecorino, there’s barely a taste in this delicious, rich pizza that some beer won’t go with.

Saloun

Saloun
The beers choices at Saloun are not only solid, but they come in 24 oz glasses! And rest assured, it’s not just a big glass, but a big glass filled to the top with beer, ounce for ounce. In addition to the decent draught offerings, including Harpoon IPA, Sierra Nevada, Magic Hat #9, and selections from Dogfish Head including 60 Minute IPA and occasional seasonals, Saloun has a hefty list of bottles to choose from as well. The energy at Saloun is just as much a draw as the beer, however; extremely friendly bartenders, live jazz (and occasionally other styles of music), and an always lively and diverse crowd of people make this a great late night spot on M Street.

Thunder Burger & Bar
A burger with an edgy, rock-and-roll attitude deserves a beer just as wild Thunder Burger & Barand incendiary to match, wouldn’t you think? With a draught selection focusing on all-American craft brews such as Dogfish Head, Flying Dog, Allagash, Stone, Smuttynose, Hook & Ladder, Bell’s, Tröegs, and Heavy Seas (to name a few) and numbering upwards of 20, along with an similarly sized and focused bottle list, Thunder Burger is another M Street offering worth a visit. Especially on days when you know you’re craving something on a bun, but can’t decide if you want it beef, bison, turkey, crab, ahi tuna, chicken, falafel, or portobello mushroom, and perhaps want to let your beer of the choice guide your meat (or non-meat) selection.

Stores

Wagner’s Liquor
Though this wine, beer, and spirits store is pushing the limits of the Georgetown/Glover Park border, it is still on the Georgetown end of Wisconsin Avenue and is a great bet forWagner's Liquorpicking up bottles on the north side of the neighborhood. With selection that range from domestic craft brews such as (but not at all limited to) Heavy Seas, Dogfish Head, Stone, Magic Hat, and Rogue to imports like Duvel, Hoegaarden, and Chimay. Craft brews can be found in six-packs spanning the entirety of the refrigerated back wall, as well as a good number 750 ml bottles. It’s a bit on the outskirts, but Wagner’s is definitely worth the journey for the great beer choices and friendly staff.

Dixie Liquors
Dixie LiquorsDixie Liquors is like Georgetown’s Statue of Liberty for all those crossing the Key Bridge from Virginia: the fist sight of Georgetown that comes into view, the flagship landmark that lets you know you’re about to cross into new territory. For some reason, I don’t recall Dixie having the great beer selection that it does until the last few years. Maybe it’s always been there and I’d missed it? Or maybe it’s a new addition? Either way, the fact is, it’s now a fantastic place to get craft bottles, on the opposite outskirt from Wagner’s. A sample of some of their extensive craft brew offerings can be found on their website (http://www.dixieliquordc.com/beerlist.html), but what really sets Dixie Liquors apart is their keg offerings. They offer kegs of both domestic microbrews (Hook & Ladder, Clipper City, Harpoon, Longhammer IPA, and Dale’s Pale Ale, to name just a few) and imports such as Peroni, Pilsner Urquell, and Bass Ale.
