I love it when good beer bars that seem to lay dormant pop back to life with a cool beer event out of nowhere. Tomorrow night, The Reef, a venerable Adams Morgan beer bar with draft only craft beer selections and the home of the Belgian Sunrise (Allagash White and Lindemans Framboise mixed) is dropping some Life and Limb in your glass.
The much hyped beer was brewed in combination with Dogfish Head and Sierra Nevada. The brew includes ingredients personal to the brewers like maple syrip from Dogfish Head founder Sam Calagione’s family farm in Massachusetts and estate barley grown at Sierra Nevada’s Ken Grossman’s brewery ‘farm.’ The yeast used was a blend of the two breweries house yeasts. The bottle art also shows numerous details of the two brewer’s lives.
One thing that might be in need of clarifying is the mix up that occurred a few months ago. A few kegs of ‘Limb and Life’ made it to the taps of Churchkey a little while back, and that beer is not the same as this beer. The earlier beer was a draft only ‘lite’ version made from the second runnings of the Life and Limb brew. The Limb and Life beer wasn’t really enjoyed by a number of people I talked to, and I am sure that the Life and Limb beer with its 10% ABV will be a much more fully flavored drink.
Also on the list for the Reef this winter is North Coast Brother Thelonious, the smoked Allagash Burnham Road, Peak Maple Oat Ale, Palm Belgian Ale, and Sierra Nevada 22 Bine.
Get a taste Wednesday night starting at 8:30 PM at The Reef – 2446 18th Street NW in Adams Morgan.

All of those beers are terrifically exciting. Though they’ve always had a serious beer program, it is really nice to see the Reef entering winter with some real heavyweights… and not just the ABVs.
Well it is interesting that they mix the beer and the same beer is not the same.
I was disappointed last night to find that the 22 Bines had been replaced by Celebration.
The firkins on Thurs nights at the Reef have been great. Love Real Ale.
