I’ve been trying to get a grip on what’s on draft in town as I think that this is probably one thing DC Beer readers really want to know. Here are a few I’ve found or heard about, but of course email me if you know about some good finds. Bartenders and bar owners are also welcome to fill my inbox with your draft lists. Please? Pretty please? Below we have selections for Commonwealth, Birreria Paradiso, RFD, The Black Squirrel, and The Reef…
Commonwealth: Twitter based beer reviewer BrewTest stopped in over at Commonwealth and found that they had Victory’s Uncle Teddy’s Bitter on cask to try. Sounds like he enjoyed it. Being a traditional English ale, a bitter is a great beer to try on cask, as that’s the way the style was intended to be enjoyed. Check out more info on Commonwealth’s offerings here…
Birreria Paradiso: 3 Floyds Calumet Queen Kolsch - These guys are getting so much 3 Floyds lately, I’m starting to feel less excited about it! Anyway, here’s another rare impossible to find (in DC) beer that only the Birreria Paradiso people can get their hands on. Hmm, the beer isn’t even listed on the 3 Floyds website, so I’d say we are all going to have to forgo the description and go drink it ourselves.
They’ve also got the awesome Bells Two Hearted on Cask which is probably even more hoppy and syrupy when served warm and with less fizz. Probably a good one to try. Two Hearted is an almost imperial IPA with a lot of hops all over it. It’s pretty high in alcohol as well at 7.0%. Tonight is 1/2 draft night at Birreria Paradiso.
RFD: The old standby has had some cool stuff popping up lately with their Port Brewing Hop 15 on draft the other day. Not to be over looked is the pretty new Clipper City’s Heavy Seas Big DIPA Imperial on draft. The latest from the Baltimore based brewery it’s the first of the Heavy Seas bomber series and it’s a double IPA rolling in at 10.6% ABV! DIPA is hopped 3 times like the Loose Cannon and features Centenial and Amarillo hops. RFD also has the much hailed Duvel Green on draft, which is the fresh draft-only young version of Duvel.
The Black Squirrel: The partner and host in our upcoming Hop Head extravaganza is also a great place to drink some traditional Bavarian style beers. One cool beer they have on draft is Czechvar. In their home country they are know as Budweiser Budvar, but here the American Budweiser got them to market their beer as Czechvar since 1911. It’s now they’ve made nice in some way and Bud is actually marketing the beer stateside. Here is your chance to drink the original which is amazingly better than the American copies. Recently the bar twittered that they have Eggenberg Hopfen Konig Pilsener, one of my favorite pils, on draft. You can get it by the half liter here!
The Reef: The Reef has taken Oskar Blues out of the can and has Mama’s Little Yella on draft for you to enjoy atop their spectacular roof deck. Mama’s Little Yella is a pilsener with 35 IBU and 5.3% ABV using tradition and modern German hops. Just try to keep it in the shade if you are on the roof deck, as it might spoil the taste pretty quickly. Don’t want to be drinking Coronas here.
