Nothing like a foul smell emmenating from the deepest darkest crevaces of DC’s Capitol Hill to ruin a good time at your favorite bar. No, I’m not talking about the inevitability of politics entering the bar conversation in DC, I’m talking about an actual odor that’s laying seige to Cap City on the Hill!
The Washington Post said this on Sunday:
“Kelvin Nwosu, general manager of Capitol City Brewing Company, a restaurant on the floor above the post office, said the smell is the result of a leaking pipe somewhere in the bowels of the building” Odor Settles in Massachusetts Avenue Post Office – washingtonpost.com.
It apparently started 3 weeks ago when the post office below Cap City sent them a notice about a leakage in the post office lobby. The restaurant has been opening walls in search of the source ever since.
“Everything has kind of really embedded really strongly in the concrete,” said Nwosu, who has worked at Capitol City since October. “We’re working on it.”
Scary stuff, but hopefully they can get it under control so that it doesn’t effect those awesome Organic Wit Beers I got to try last week. If you want to drink Capitol City Brewing Company beers, but don’t want to deal with the sewer problems check out their downtown location at 1100 New York Ave or Cafe 1612 on U Street which serves a bunch of Cap City on draft including the new organic beers. You can get a burger and a beer on Friday for the $8 special.

Dear Mike,
There is an inaccuracy in your reporting of this story. Sunday’s Washington Post story reported on the unpleasant odor stemming from the Massachusetts Avenue Post Office branch, which is located in the basement of the 100-year-old Postal Square Building. Other than one post office customer commenting that the odor smelled like “sewage,†nobody else has made the claim including patrons of Cap City. Capitol City Brewing Company has identified the source of the leak and discovered that the overflow was caused by grease buildup in an aging pipe and the problem is being remedied. And, according to post office workers, the odor has dissipated. No odor was ever present in the restaurant. The DC Health Inspector visited Cap City today and gave the restaurant (and beer) a clean report.
