Canned beer gets push from the Post

Greg Kitsock, Washington Post beer writer and a regular figure at the numerous beer events around the city, has written an article spotlighting craft beer in cans. It’s interesting to see that Blue Mountain Brewery down in Central Virginia is starting to can and is available now just outside the city…

Next month, the Blue Mountain Brewery in rural Nelson County will become the first Virginia microbrewery to can its beer. Using a hand-operated filler and seamer, owner Taylor Smack will package his Full Nelson Pale Ale in 12-ounce aluminum cylinders — at a laborious 20 cases per hour — and ship it to better beer outlets around the commonwealth.

Oskar Blues was the first craft canner, but recent upstarts are making it onto the scene.

One of my favorites (also featured in Kitsocks article) is Butternuts Brewery which has great logos for each of it’s beers. Have a few Pork Slap IPA’s before you head over to the Beer and BBQ event this weekend–the can features to pigs giving each other a chest bump!

Where should you go to experience canned beers? As mentioned before, Comet Ping Pong has a few canned delicacies. Kitsock mentions neighborhood bar Red Durby as a possible location. Red Derby specializes in canned beer and boasts a cool divebar atmosphere. Look for the Derby hat painted above the door. You can find it on this google map below…
