DC Area Brewers Go Organic

It’s only natural for small breweries to align with small scale farmers and the ‘organic’ movement. I am happy to see that a number of local breweries are giving it a shot. The few weeks ago Clipper City’s Hugh Sisson wrote a post called Organic Beer, What’s the Point. CC has a line of Oxford Organic beers and Sisson sees small organic farmers as artisans in their own right. Supporting their efforts encourages the growth of quality ingredients and the success of other independent entrepreneurs just like him.

Beer Activist had a nice write up of his trip to the Union Station Cap City Brewing Co. where he tried their new Organic Saison. He went on to discuss their future organic plans:

What’s more is that this is the first in an ongoing organic series. Once the saison runs dry at the end of June, he’ll put on an organic wit, which will also include some organic coriander, and should pour from July to September. Then it’s an organic trippel from October through December.

I’ve also run up against some organic beers this week. Despite the lure of the $1.50 drafts they have on Wednesdays, I couldn’t resist trying Rock Bottom Ballston’s Organic IPA. It was a nice amber color that rang in at 6.8% ABV, but you can only taste the alcohol heat a little in the very finish. The drink was smooth up front with almost doughy malt flavors and notes of candied fruit. It felt both smooth and dry while ending on a bitter note that lacked any real citrus flavors. I think it cost around $4.50, so enjoy it while it lasts in your glass.
